White Noise

Tonight was the first time in a long time that I met with a large group of only Caucasian friends. It was a gathering of women from a Girl-Scout type group I belonged to when I was a young 'un.

Why did this strike me as odd? I'm often asked why I don't have more American friends (an obvious euphemism for "white" friends). When I talk to other whiteys about my friends, said whitey will always ask, "Huh? What kind of name was that?" I definitely have very few Janes and Joes in my Rolodex.

Having grown up in So Cal my whole life, I've been privileged to be surrounded by a veritable un-melting pot of culture. I love that 10 minutes from my house in any radius is a Little Korea, a Little Saigon, a Little India, and of course, many Mexican enclaves.

So what gives with the lack of American friends? I have them, and I love them; however, I'm also drawn to what's different. Variety truly is the spice of life.

Tonight was a joyful gathering of 25+ women (and some of their mothers!) who supported each other through those terrible teenage years. It was great to reconnect with these lovely ladies and learn all about their careers and families, as well as failures and successes.
