My Hero

In my former life, I was a journalist. Not a big-time journalist, but I paid my dues as a writer and editor at three college newspapers, plus two local newspapers. I never want to go to another city council meeting again.

I've been given the chance to sub for a couple of weeks for my program's newspaper class. I taught it last summer, and that experience was the impetus for me starting this very blog. I had a renewed respect for exploratory writing that was based in real observations.

Today, my students and I (all three of us...yes the global wreck called the economy has hurt our enrollment) will explore integrity in the media (err...is that an oxymoron?). I've fished out the DVD of 2005's mighty excellent film:
"Good Night, and Good Luck."

Just chose some clips to show from this flick, and I got goosebumps watching David Strathairn channel Edward R. Murrow, the champion of truth in news for the idiot box. It makes me feel proud that there was a time in this country when newscasters actually covered and challenged real issues. Screw you McCarthy.
