Cryin' Crooners

5 Songwriters Who Make Me Sad

1. Tom Waits - He's a brilliant master at painting pictures with words. Many of his songs are so poignant, I know I need to keep a box of kleenex nearby when listening.

2. Hank Williams - Not the Jr., or even the III Mr. Williams. This is the original down-and-out country music outlaw. It is unfortunate that he was on a crash course to his fate of an early death, but no one can sing the white boy blues like he did.

3. Elvis Costello - Forget the poppy rhythms of songs like "Radio Radio," his pseudo-love songs are what pack a punch. He perfectly mixes irony with a twist of hope and beauty.

4. Otis Redding - You go listen to "These Arms of Mine," and tell me how you feel afterward. His voice makes me ache down to my littlest toe.

5. Patsy Cline - I still avoid listening to Ms. Cline's offerings for fear of damaging my eye makeup. She's got soul, class, and helped paved the way for many other female artists of her era.
